Keeping Orca Whales in Captivity Should Be Banned Essay

For many years, we’ve been going to such places like, SeaWorld, and Six Flags, to see vast animals, like Orcas, also known as the killer whale, which we wouldn’t normally see out in the wild. Orcas have been around for millions of years; it’s known to be one of the smartest mammals, closest to humans. Since of their friendliness, people have taken advantage of them. For the past sixty years people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make profit out of it, but never thought about their lives. What if you were kept in a cage for years, and was pushed to do such activities, you wouldn’t do in your normal life. After seeing these incidents occur, from time to time, people have urged to ban Se aWorld from doing these activities. Keeping them activities will create more problems and will loose such person like Dawn, who loved and cared for the animal, but they cannot be trusted. That is why they are called Killer whales. People say that keeping orca’s in captivities is not a problem, yet they do not realize that, orcas are also human beings. There are several reasons, why keeping these thirty-feet long creatures, in captivities is a problem. One of them, which are the tank, which is too small, compared to ocean where they can swim freely. One the other side, in captivities, the space is limited. Comparatively, to how they swim out in the wild â€Å"orcas can swim up to 100 miles per day- a phenomenal amount, in comparison to the exercise they receive in captivity†(Cronin). While being in captivity, orca has to keep swimming in circles or floats. Out â€Å"In the wild, killer whales typically travel in pods of between five and 30†(Melissa). In captiviti es there are only few whales, so it makes them more aggressive toward one another. This sometimes can be lead to danger by killing each other for fighting to gain power of the tank.
